Committe for Social Change celebrates 25th annual parade in Glennville

$

0

The Committee for Social Change, Inc. is a non-profit organization located in Glennville, Georgia was organized in 1990.  The idea for the celebration in observance of the holiday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  was birthed from the vision of Mr. Ruben King, Sr. and his wife Mrs. Novella King.

While visiting in another city during the pouring rain they observed a parade honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  After they watched the parade, they considered how nice the parade was for that city.   They discussed the idea of hosting a parade in their hometown of Glennville, Ga. to honor the life and legacy of Dr. King.

Twenty-five years ago, there were many celebrations of Dr. King’s birthday, except in the City of Glennville.  To enhance the cultural activities of this community and to give the youth something to believe in, the Lord touched the heart of Mr. and Mrs. Ruben King Sr. to begin a celebration and they said, “We can do this.”

After many discussions, the committee was formed and named the M.L.K. Committee later changing the name to the Committee for Social Change which was inspired by the late Richard King to fit the need of this community.  The goal of the committee is to assist high school graduates and coordinate activities that would encourage the youth of this community.

Over the past 25 years the Committee for Social Change, Inc. grew from a group of concerned citizens to an organization that helps the community in numerous ways.  The committee continues to grow and is successful as an active part of the community and gives back to the community by:  awarding 82 scholarships to deserving high school graduates, sponsoring back to school festivals, drug awareness program, donated books to the Head Start program and the Glennville Public Library, pageants and food boxes.   A variety of fundraisers are held throughout the year to provide for scholarship funds.  These fundraisers include donations from individuals, voluntary membership dues, the scholarship banquet, donations from businesses, dinner sales, and basketball tournaments.

Please them on Jan. 17 at 10 a.m. for the parade and the ceremony will follow the parade at Center of Life - Church of God, 1202 M.L. King, Jr. Dr., Glennville, Ga.  with the guest speaker being Mrs. Fronita King Holston of Atlanta,Ga.

Savannah-Chatham police detectives have added theft charges against a Savannah man arrested in a SWAT operation Saturday after identifying $20,000 worth of wire found in his residence.

Justin Creed Van Arsdale, 24, now has been charged with theft by receiving after learning that the pickup load of wire had been stolen from a Pooler construction site, said Julian Miller, police spokesman. Detectives from the West Chatham precinct had asked the public to help identify the wire after it was discovered after Van Arsdale’s arrest.
