Gas prices down 6.3 cents in metro Savannah

$

Average retail gasoline prices in Savannah have fallen 6.3 cents a gallon in the past week to $1.99 a gallon on Monday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 262 gas outlets in Savannah.

The national average has fallen 5.8 cents a gallon in the last week to $2.05, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.

Prices Sunday in Savannah were $1.27 a gallon lower than the same day one year ago and are 38.6 cents a gallon lower than a month ago. The national average has decreased 39.4 cents a gallon during the last month and stands $1.24 a gallon lower than one year ago.

“The light at the end of the tunnel is dimming as gasoline prices have nearly caught up with the drop in crude oil prices,” said Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst with GasBuddy. “We’ll certainly be watching the price of oil during this shortened trading week, and if oil fails to continue declining, it’s likely that it won’t get much better at the pump.”

A bright spot remains, however, for diesel consumers, DeHaan said.

“Diesel prices have eclipsed the decline in gasoline prices, with prices averaging a drop twice that of gasoline in the last week. Diesel now sells for an average of $2.89 a gallon and will fall another 10 to 25 cents in the next few weeks,” he said.

Some quick gasoline price statistics as of Monday:

• Missouri has the lowest state average in the country; at $1.75 today, it is one of 26 states averaging under $2.00/gal.

• Only one state is averaging above $3.00/gal today: Hawaii ($3.324).

• In the lower 48 states, California has the highest average at $2.498, followed by New York at $2.494.

• Every state has a lower average today than the same day last year. Michigan, at $1.911 today, has seen the biggest drop from the same day last year, down $1.40 from its January 19, 2014 average.

• Only two states have averages less than $1.00 lower than last year: Alaska (86cts lower) and Hawaii (71cts lower).

• There are only three states that don’t have a single station reporting a price under $2.00/gal:

1. Vermont (lowest station reporting at $2.09)

2. Alaska (lowest station reporting at $2.53)

3. Hawaii (lowest station reporting at $2.86)

• Of the 48 states (including Washington DC) with at least one station reporting a price under $2.00/gal, 42 of them have over 15 stations reporting under that threshold.

• 22 states don’t have a single station above $3.00/gal: AZ, ID, IN, IA, KS, MA, MI, MS, MO, MT, NE, NM, ND, OK, OR, RI, SC, SD, VT, VA, WV, WY

18 trees to be replaced on Harmon Street

Savannah is partnering with Georgia Power on a project to improve the streetscape and reduce tree-related problems on a four-block stretch on Savannah’s east side.

On Wednesday and Thursday, city and Georgia Power crews will begin removing 18 sweet gum trees on Harmon Street between Anderson and Waldburg, and replacing them with 24 crape myrtles. The sweet gums interfere with power lines, requiring regular maintenance to trim and cut back limbs. The tree’s spiky fruit also causes a mess on the sidewalks and streets. The crape myrtles, which grow to 20-30 feet tall, will require less maintenance, and create a more attractive streetscape, according to city officials.

Police: 2 arrested in Savannah 'shoplifting ring'

$

Savannah-Chatham police say they arrested a second person Monday who is a member of a suspected “shoplifting ring” responsible for several thefts from retailers in the city.

Bridgett Watts, 21, was arrested Monday at the intersection of West 33rd and Montgomery Streets. On Jan. 5, police arrested Charlainia Varner, 23, at her Clearwater Lane residence.

Both women are charged with felony shoplifting and misdemeanor shoplifting after being linked to thefts on Jan. 5 at Wal-Mart on the 1900 block of East Montgomery Crossroad and Kroger on the 300 block of Mall Boulevard, said Eunica Baker, police spokeswoman.

Watts and Varner exited Wal-Mart without paying for several hundred dollars in merchandise, Baker said. The pair abandoned the items in the parking lot during a foot pursuit by store security. They fled the scene in a rented Ford Explorer with a Florida license plate driven by a third suspect. Immediately afterwards, Watts and Varner were driven to Kroger where they swiped more items, Baker said.

Varner was apprehended by metro officers while attempting to flee.

Investigators believe at least 10 more suspects are working with Watts and Varner in an elaborate shoplifting ring in metro’s Southside and Islands precincts.

Investigators also issued warrants for Elauna Burroughs, 19, and seek Michelle McClain, 35, for questing in connection to this case. Burroughs frequents the Cann Park neighborhood, and resides in hotels between west Savannah and Garden City, Baker said.

McClain is known to frequent the Tatumville neighborhood and hotels near Abercorn Street and Johnston Street. McClain sometimes goes by the name Michelle Jones.

This is an ongoing investigation, and more arrests are expected, Baker said.

Anyone with information on this case should call CrimeStoppers at 912-234-2020 or text CRIMES (274637) using the keyword CSTOP2020. Tipsters remain anonymous and may qualify for a cash reward.

Police say three recent shootings in Savannah left one man dead and three people injured.

One man died after he was shot in front of an apartment on the 1900 block of East 51st Street about 7 p.m. Monday, said Julian Miller, Savannah-Chatham police spokesman. His name has not been released by investigators.

Earlier, about 2:30 p.m., Rakeem Wright, 24, reported he was talking to some women on the first block of West 62 nd Street when he was shot by someone in a passing car, Miller said. Wright was charged after he provided false information to Central Precinct officers, who discovered 10 outstanding warrants against him. A second victim, 19, arrived at a hospital hours later for treatment of her wound, Miller said. Neither injury was believed to be life-threatening.

Just after midnight Sunday, a 45-year-old man arrived at St. Joseph’s Hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound to his arm, Miller said. He reported he was delivering pizza at an apartment complex on the 12000 block of Middleground Road when a masked male attempted to rob him and fired at his car as he sped away.
