The Development Authority of Bryan County, the Israeli-based company Caesarstone and the Georgia Department of Economic Development have received the Eagle Star Deal of the Year Award from conexx: America Israel Business Connector.

The nonprofit organization helps bring mutual economic advances to Israel and the southeastern United States.

Caesarstone, which manufactures quartz surfaces marketed worldwide, will spend approximately $100 million to build their first U.S. plant with two production lines in Bryan County.

Yos Shiran, CEO of Caesarstone, said the company is pleased by the recognition.

“North America, specifically the United States, is our fastest growing market, and we look forward to opening our manufacturing facility in Richmond Hill and bringing Caesarstone’s products to the homes and hearts of America,” Shiran said. “We selected Belfast Commerce Centre for the quality of the workforce, the superior logistics infrastructure and the support we received from the community and state.”

The project was assisted by The Georgia Department of Economic Development and the Development Authority of Bryan County. Caesarstone is expected to eventually create 180 jobs in Bryan County.

“This project was truly a collaborative effort between Caesarstone, the Georgia Department of Economic Development, Georgia Power, the Development Authority of Bryan County, the city of Richmond Hill,

the Bryan County Board of Commissioners, and TerraPointe,” said Steve Croy, chairman of the development authority. “Caesarstone’s selection of Belfast Commerce Centre validates Bryan County as a desirable place for international companies to locate operations.”

Shai Robkin, president and CEO of conexx, said his organization is impressed when it sees government and private industry working together in a true spirit of partnership.

“Our Eagle Star Deal of the Year honored Bryan County, the Georgia Department of Economic Development and the Israeli company Caesarstone for demonstrating how well everyone can pull in the same direction to overcome the many obstacles that often prevent deals of this nature from reaching fruition,” Robkin said.

The U.S. Caesarstone facility, at full build-out, will expand the company’s current production by 50 percent. Company officials said the first line will be in production by the second quarter of 2015, with the second production line to be operational by the fourth quarter.

About Caesarstone:

Caesarstone, founded and headquartered in Caesarea, Israel, manufactures custom quartz surfaces, using the latest technologies and innovative techniques to create the ideal surface for kitchens, vanities, floors and other interior surfaces for both residential and commercial buildings.

It offers more than 40 unique colors and textures available in more than 50 countries.

ALTERNATIVE FUEL VEHICLES ON DISPLAY

The fourth annual Alternative Vehicle Roadshow, sponsored by Georgia Power, other energy companies and the Public Service Commission, came to Savannah Friday afternoon with a selection of vehicles put on display outside the International Trade and Convention Center on Hutchinson Island.

A panel discussion and seminars on alternative fuels inside the conventioncenter featured Public Service Commisioner Tim Echols and representatives from Georgia Power, AGL, Municipal Gas Authority, NISSAN, EFACEC EV Chargers, FlexFuel Awareness Campaign, Propane Education and Research Council (PERC) and others.

The discussion focused on the practicality of implementing alternative fuel transportation solutions and the benefits of swapping out fuel-guzzling gas and diesel vehicles for clean, domestically-produced fuels such as natural gas, propane, electricity and biofuels.

Greenville in overdrive, 21-1 over Gnats

$

GREENVILLE — Tim Roberson doubled four times and drove in seven runs as the Greenville Drive handed the Savannah Sand Gnats their worst loss of the season 21-1 on Friday night before 6,146 at Fluor Field at the West End.

Savannah (1-1 second half, 45-23 overall) entered the game with the Class A South Atlantic League’s best ERA (2.64). Only two teams had scored in double figures in wins over Savannah: Charleston by 10-3 on May 18, and Asheville by 12-6 on June 4. Greenville nearly equaled that 22-run total by itself.

The Drive (1-1, 35-36) collected 20 hits in their eight innings. The Sand Gnats had more errors — four, all by third baseman Jon Leroux — than hits, three, in nine innings.

The Gnats’ first hit against Drive starter Teddy Stankiewicz (6-4, 3.39 ERA) was Colton Plaia’s double to lead off the sixth inning.

With two outs, Plaia scored when Champ Stuart reached on a throwing error by shortstop Tzu-Wei Lin. Yeixon Ruiz followed with a single to advance Stuart to third base, but Victor Cruzado was called out on strikes to end the Gnats’ lone threat.

Gnats starter John Michael Gant (7-3, 2.13 ERA), a Savannah native who pitched in Tuesday’s SAL All-Star Game, had no run or defensive support in yielding 11 runs but only one earned along with eight hits, three walks and one balk in four innings.

Relievers Tyler Vanderheiden (five runs in 1 2/3 innings) and John Mincone (five in 2 1/3 innings) fared no better. The three Savannah pitchers walked seven to just one strikeout in eight innings.

The Drive went down in order in the first two innings, then scored at least two runs in each inning the rest of the way. All 11 Greenville batters had at least one hit, 10 scored at least one run, and eight drove in at least one run. First baseman Roberson was 4 for 6 with three runs scored and seven RBIs.

Nearly 100 bicyclists and a lone unicyclist participated Saturday in the first annual JCB Dig The Ride. The 5k/10k/15k race took place following the annual Mud Run JCB hosts every year at its Pooler property.

View more photos from Dig The Ride

At the start of the race, almost 100 people had registered to participate in the race, which included muddy trials, slippery hills and dirty, shallow pools of water.

Advanced riders completed three laps around the 5k course, while immediate bikers rode two laps, with novice and youth riders pedaling once around the challenging 5k course.

JCB officials were pleased with the Dig The Ride turnout and hope to make this an annual part of the Mud Run festivities.

JCB run turns mud into money for charity

While the third annual JCB Mud Run probably increased sales of soap, body wash and beer, Saturday’s event certainly helped young children in West Savannah.

See photos from the run here and photos from the finish line here

According to JCB spokesperson Pam Veiock, the event raised over $100,000 for The Lady Bamford Center for Early Childhood Development, with a check presentation planned for this week at the center at 1410 Richards St.

This year, the event at JCB’s North American headquarters in Pooler also included the inaugural JCB Dig the Ride, a 5-mile all-terrain bike course with climbs, bridges, jumps and some speed areas for passing. All proceeds from both races went to The Lady Bamford Center.

The swiftest two-person team was Team JCB UK, which also won the 2013 JCB UK Mud Run, in 38 minutes and 1 second.

Veiock said the number of entries wasn’t available Saturday afternoon but it exceeded last year’s total of roughly 2,000.

Gnats rebound to beat Greenville in extra innings

$

GREENVILLE S.C.— A day after one of the most lopsided losses in franchise history, the Savannah Sand Gnats rebounded with a 7-6 win over Greenville in 11 innings.

The Gnats put a 21-1 loss against Greenville on Friday night by winning a nail-biter Saturday.

Savannah’s Champ Stuart drew a five-pitch walk off Taylor Grover to lead off the top of the 11th. He immediately stole second, his sixth steal of the season. Yeixon Ruiz flew out to right, deep enough for Stuart to tag up and advance to third. Victor Cruzado brought him in with the go-ahead run with a line-drive single to right.

All-Star reliever Akeel Morris came in to pitch the bottom half of the 11th and shut the door on Greenville by striking out Carlos Asuaje to end the game for his fourth save of the year. Morris lowered his ERA to 0.27.

The Gnats took the lead in the second when Nelfi Zapata stroked a one-out double to left field, and came around to score on a clutch two-out single to center by Jeff Glenn.

In the top of the fourth, Dominic Smith led off with a double to left. Zapata brought him home with a double to center. Stefan Sabol singled to move Zapata to third and then stole second — setting up a two-run single by Glenn that put the Gnats up 4-0.

Greenville rallied with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Manuel Margot had an RBI single but was thrown out at second trying to stretch it into a double by Gnats center fielder Stuart. Later in the inning, Jake Romanski had an RBI double to left and eventually scored on Jimmy Rider’s single.

Savannah added two in the sixth when Jorge Rivero singled and moved to third on a double by Sabol. Glenn delivered again with his fourth RBI of the night, plating Rivero with a line-drive single to left. Sabol later scored on a force out by Ruiz.

But Greenville responded with a two-run single by Forrestt Allday in its half of the sixth.

Gnat reliever Hunter Carnevale entered in the bottom of the eighth with two outs and the bases loaded. But a passed ball by Glenn allowed Tzu-Wei Lin to score as Greenville tied it up at 6-6.

The bottom third of the Gnats lineup went 9 for 15 with five RBIs and four runs scored. Zapata had three doubles and went 3 for 5. Glenn was 3 for 5 with four RBIs and Sabol went 3 for 5 with a double, stolen base and run scored.

GREENVILLE — Greenville rode a pair of big innings to a 7-3 win over Savannah as the Drive managed to split the first series of the second half with the Sand Gnats.

Trailing 3-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth, Greenville scored three runs in the sixth and three more in the seventh to secure the victory.

Savannah starter Chris Flexen had a solid outing — allowing three runs on six hits in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out five and walked two.

The Drive rallied in the sixth as Kendrick Perkins got things started with an RBI double. Paul Paez entered in relief of Flexen and walked Zach Kapstein. Perkins stole third base and scored on a throwing error, and Carlos Coste added an RBI single as the Drive took a 4-3 lead.

Paez (0-1) was tagged with the loss after giving up four runs (one earned) and four hits in 2 1/3 innings.

In the seventh, Perkins drove in a run with a groundout and Kevin Mager hit a two-run double to highlight an inning that started with the leadoff batter reaching base on an error by Gnat third baseman Nelfi Zapata.

Greenville got solid outing from three pitchers. Myles Smith started — allowing a pair of runs in four innings. Mike Adams picked up his second win of the year in three innings of relief. He allowed one run and struck out three. And Pete Ruiz closed things out with two innings of shutout relief.

The Gnats scored in the second on a sacrifice fly by Stefan Sabol. Savannah added a run in the third after Patrick Biondi led off with a single, advanced to second on a balk and scored on a groundout by Victor Cruzado.

In the sixth, Gnat second baseman Jorge Rivero led off with a walk and scored on a double by Colton Plaia.

Savannah travels to Charleston and opens a series with the RiverDogs tonight at 7:05. The Gnats return home to Grayson Stadium Friday night when they start a four-game set with Rome.
